“Workplace of the Future” Global Student Competition

Denver, Colorado (July 10, 2012) — Fentress Architects is thrilled to announce the esteemed members of the Final Jury for the 2012 Fentress Global Challenge, an international competition for architecture and interior design students to present their vision for the Workplace of the Future.

The Fentress Global Challenge is an annual international idea competition created to engage students worldwide in the exploration of future design possibilities in public architecture. For the second annual competition, the studio invites architecture and interior design students to share innovative ideas about the future of workplace architecture, considering:

  • What are the fundamental purposes of a workplace?
  • How will the workplace of the future function?
  • What is the future of workplace design?

Fentress Global Challenge 2012 Jury Members

Chase Rynd, a nationally recognized leader in the museum and arts communities, has held the position of executive director of the National Building Museum since September 2003. Created by Congress in 1980, the National Building Museum is a private, nonprofit institution, commemorating American achievements in architecture, design, construction, urban planning, and engineering. Under Rynd’s leadership, the Museum has achieved a strong national profile through enhanced educational programs, scholarly and visually engaging exhibitions, and numerous outreach efforts.

Christian Sottile, AIA, NCARB, is dean of the School of Building Arts at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Sottile also serves as principal of Sottile & Sottile, a Savannah-based urban design firm. His work includes civic design and master planning, emphasizing historic research, urban analysis and community-wide engagement. He has received over 25 awards from the Congress for New Urbanism, the American Planning Association, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, as well as a National Honor Award for Urban Design from the American Institute of Architects.

Frank Duffy, CBE, PPRIBA is a leading figure in workplace strategy and design and continues to write extensively about his chosen field. He was one of the founders of DEGW which over forty years became a globally- renowned strategic consultancy with offices in Europe, North America, and the Asia Pacific region. He continues to act as an independent consultant helping clients make more efficient, effective and expressive use of workspace. Today his principal intellectual challenge is to justify the value of place in an increasingly virtual world.

Jim Keane is president of the Steelcase Group, which is part of Steelcase Inc. In this role, Jim oversees the sales, marketing and product development activities of the Steelcase, Turnstone, PolyVision, and Details brands in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Steelcase Inc. is the global leader in the office furniture industry and delivers high performing work environments to its customers by providing products and services based on insights into the ways people work.

Michael Winters, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, serves as Principal and Director of Design and Interiors at Fentress Architects. Michael began his career with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. He joined Fentress Architects in 1981 and has been the Lead Designer for some of the firm’s largest and most complex projects, including Denver International Airport and Clark County Government Center. His design portfolio is in excess of $9 billion and includes 10 national design competition wins, 109 design awards and acknowledgement in 177 publications.

Sabret Flocos, IIDA, LEED AP, is a founding principal of FOX Architects. Sabret brings 30 years of experience in the architectural/design industry and possesses highly specialized interior design skills, including strategic planning, programming, space planning and concept development. While Sabret is adept at translating programmatic requirements into the physical environment, her greatest strength lies in her ability to synthesize ideas and create spaces that tell stories and support the message and vision of her clients.

Jury members will evaluate submissions based on their Creativity, Sustainability, Functionality, and Employee Experience. The first place winner will be awarded a prize valued at $10,000, including $3,000 cash and a paid internship at Fentress Architects. Second and third place will receive cash prizes of $1,000 and $500 respectively. The People’s Choice winner will receive cash prize of $300. Winning designs will be displayed at the Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles, California.
