San Diego Convention Center Expansion
San Diego, California, USACompletion 2015
In addition to everything you would expect at a world-class convention center, the transformational bayside expansion creates a 5-acre, waterfront public space, ideal for picnics, community events, music festivals and public art.
The design activates the bayside pedestrian promenade, providing 30,000 new square feet of retail shops and restaurants. The expansion establishes the largest ballroom along the Pacific Coast and the largest contiguous exhibit space west of the Mississippi River. Aiming for LEED Gold certification, the design reduces the building mass and volume of a prior conceptual design by 38 percent. Officials estimate the expansion will create more than 6,500 permanent jobs and provide an annual economic impact of $698 million for local businesses and the city, in addition to the center’s current $1.3 billion impact.
