CHS Terminal Redevelopment + Improvement

Charleston, South Carolina, USA

This terminal project allows the airport to grow in capacity from 2.5 million to 4 million annual enplanements.

The renovation and expansion of the Charleston International Airport is a part of the Terminal Redevelopment and Improvement Program (TRIP). This project allows the airport to grow in capacity from 2.5 million annual enplanements to 4 million.

Fentress dramatically enhanced the existing terminal by upgrading retail, restrooms, and other amenities throughout as part of the project scope. Moreover, we extended Concourse B and increased the number of gates on two concourses from 10 to 16. We also consolidated security into a single, unified checkpoint. Additionally, we added a new baggage and handling system, Central Plant, and rental car facility.

Inspired Design

As a city, Charleston has evolved into a competitive metropolis of the 21st century. The 25-foot tall, floor-to-ceiling glass curtainwall in the central retail and concession center, provides a view from the main entry straight through to the airfield, welcoming visitors and creating a connection to the airfield and aircraft. Improved amenities such as enhanced retail spaces and upgraded restrooms dramatically increase the comfort level of the terminal and the concourses. The overall design sensibility is one that is both distinctly modern, in keeping with Charleston’s current reality, while remaining welcoming. By consolidating the two security checkpoints from their current locations at the entrance of each concourse to a single consolidated area in the modernized terminal, wayfinding will be simplified along with reducing wait times and crowding.  Once through the central screening area, passengers enjoy a richer variety of local and national food venues and retail stores before proceeding to their gate.
