Ronstadt Transit Center

Tucson, Arizona, USA

A colonnaded arbor wraps around two sides of this dynamic civic space, lined with shaded seating and arched entries.

The University of Arizona Environmental Research Laboratory designed two 50-foot cooling towers for Ronstadt. These provide additional relief from Tucson’s sweltering summer heat. More than 20,000 ceramic tiles fabricated by a local artist decorate the interior columns and beams of the arbor. An exterior constructed of locally recycled brick allows the Center to blend with its urban context. Located in Tucson’s historic arts district, Ronstadt was instrumental to the neighborhood’s revitalization and has become a destination for festivals and community events.  Fentress’ design has received three awards from the American Institute of Architects.
