This project at Terminal D-West is the most significant expansion program undertaken at IAH since the airport opened in 1969.
The newly completed IAH Terminal D West sets a benchmark for timeless design, flexibility, sustainability, and advanced technology. This transformational project includes four key components:
- Replacing the International Central Processor (ICP)
- Renovating Terminal D’s Concourse
- Adding an international concourse, called Pier D West
- Constructing a cutting-edge baggage screening facility
A Unified and Welcoming Design
The design unifies the airport campus with a cohesive aesthetic inspired by the warm earth tones of Houston’s bayous. This thoughtful palette complements the surrounding environment, creating a natural connection. To celebrate Houston’s culture and diversity, the terminal incorporates art installations, multimedia displays, and local culinary offerings. Houston, as the fourth-largest and one of the most culturally rich cities in the U.S., takes center stage throughout the space.
Enhancing the Passenger Journey
Passengers traveling by ground benefit from an upgraded road system, which simplifies access and improves efficiency. A large protective roof canopy, designed with distinct elliptical shapes, provides both shelter and a clear wayfinding element. This feature creates a welcoming entry point reminiscent of a front porch, offering comfort and clarity.
At the security checkpoints, flexible spaces equipped with advanced technology streamline the screening process. Features like facial recognition enhance efficiency, ensuring a smooth and seamless experience for travelers.
Cutting-Edge Arrival Experience
Air travelers disembark at one of 19 new gates, each built to accommodate wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 or 787 Dreamliner. Upon arrival, passengers enter a vibrant central meeting area filled with natural light and fresh air. The design creates a welcoming and memorable atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.

Sustainable by Design
One of this facility’s most unique features is the strategic and artistic perforation of solid walls and ceilings with windows. The effect emulates a myriad of ways in which Houstonians find comfort in their sub-tropical climate. It also preserves views to the outdoors while protecting occupants from the hot Texas sun. The west-facing wall of Pier D West features a particularly striking application of this strategy, as does the central meter and greeter area, which will be both bathed in natural light and suffused with natural ventilation.
