Winner of a national competition, Fentress’ design embodies the essence of Marine Corps heritage.
Emblematic of the sacrifice and courage of those who serve their country, the Marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima is evoked by the roof’s soaring 210-foot mast. The design also plays off images of swords at salute and aircraft at take-off and bayoneted rifles. Refinement of the design and its programs involved an immersive process to understand the Marine Corp’s history and culture. The Museum has won more than 20 awards for design excellence and innovation within two years of opening, and it more than doubled attendance projections in its first year. Marine Corps Heritage Foundation President and CEO Lt. General Ron Christmas offered his own salute: “What we have created here is truly a national treasure.
