Sited on Court House Square, this complex is located in the heart of historic Charlottesville.
Expansion, renovation, restoration, and preservation of Albermarle County Courts Complex will enhance the Complex’s ability to serve the community and judicial system now and well into the future. Primary objectives for this project include:
- significantly enhancing the safety and security of all who visit as well as work within the Complex;
- preserving the historic fabric of two iconic and historically significant buildings;
- reflecting the County and City’s stability and permanence; and
- leadership in environmental, energy, sustainability, and efficiency mandates.
Fentress’ multi-story addition to historic Levy Opera House will house a multitude of functions. Inside will be a City and two County General District Courts, space for future court expansion, Clerk operations for both the City and County, and an underground sallyport with secure parking. Renovations to Levy Opera House will allow the building to serve the needs of Albemarle County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. Renovation of the neighboring historic county courthouse will serve the Circuit Court and Circuit Court Clerk’s operations.
Material and equipment selection as well as design and construction methods are being selected to maximize sustainability as well as preserve the historic integrity of the site, which is located on Court House Square in the heart of Charlottesville and Albemarle County Courthouse Historic District.
