A sculptural glass atrium rises from Stockton’s historic urban streets, simultaneously respecting the human scale of surrounding structures and symbolizing transparency for county government functions. Stepping back from the corner, the design surrenders street level space to a public plaza and art installation. The angled green-glass atrium echoes the mountains of Yosemite National Park in the distance. Welcoming during the day, at night the form becomes a beacon to enliven the neighborhood and marks the seat of county government. Another art installation just within the lobby accentuates a main pedestrian corridor that leads to McLeod Lake—a tributary of the San Joaquin River.
To bring the complex profile to life, we worked in intense collaboration with our engineering designers. Together we conceived of the integration of high-performance glass supported on exposed structural framing. This LEED Gold building is home to over five hundred staff who serve a population of nearly 750 million.
