Mathematics Building + Gemmill Library at University of Colorado Boulder

Boulder, Colorado, USA

Designing a new building for this beautiful campus is a challenge, since it requires introducing a contemporary identity to a suite of buildings that follows a strict architectural style.

Fentress’ intricate design skillfully walked the fine line between respect and innovation. The building serves the study, lecture, research and office needs of mathematics and engineering departments.  Along with the requisite native sandstone exteriors and red clay tile roofs, the complex features the use of concrete and contemporary fenestration to blend with the modern engineering center and Astrophysics Towers. A gracious loggia and sweeping plaza integrate the building within the campus, while an 80-foot-tall campanile signifies the structure’s important role.  An emphasis on energy conservation through daylighting means more than 80% of interior spaces are designed with natural light.
